More Than a Simulation: HGI MUN Brings Students Closer to Diplomacy and International Education

During the event, students took on the roles of representatives from different countries, where they had to defend positions, listen to different viewpoints, negotiate, and seek solutions to issues shaping the international landscape. The initiative challenged participants to develop skills that do not always have a place in the traditional school routine.

More than simply simulating diplomacy, the conference aimed to show young people that understanding the world, listening to different perspectives, and negotiating solutions are essential skills for shaping the future.

Learning by Doing

For Hayek Global College, experiences such as HGI MUN are part of an educational approach that connects academic learning with real-world situations and different perspectives on global affairs.
By participating in the conference, students move beyond the role of passive recipients of information and begin making decisions, building arguments, and engaging with different viewpoints. The experience also requires collaboration: decisions depend not only on each participant’s individual position but also on their ability to engage in dialogue and reach agreements.

This dynamic is precisely what sets the experience apart from conventional classroom activities. Throughout the conference, students must take a stand while also recognizing that different perspectives and interests are involved in every issue.

For Edson Agatti, Executive Director of Hayek Global College, the opportunity to step outside the usual school routine is one of the event’s most valuable features.
“You chose to study a new topic, dive into a debate with your peers, and take part in all of this. So, we can already say that this is a group of people who stand out,” he said during the conference’s opening ceremony.

Putting Yourself in Others’ Shoes to Understand the World

One of the main challenges presented by HGI MUN is learning to adopt a perspective different from one’s own.
When representing a country, students must understand its interests, positions, and challenges before advocating for a particular proposal. This transforms debate into an exercise in active listening, argumentation, and understanding different realities.

“You are able to discuss issues and put yourselves in other people’s shoes, engaging in civilized debate and understanding that sometimes we need to think about others,” Edson Agatti emphasized.

This experience also brings students closer to issues that extend beyond national borders. The conflicts and negotiations discussed during the conference demonstrate how decisions made in different parts of the world can have consequences for societies across the globe.

An Education with a Global Perspective

HGI MUN also reflects the international focus of Hayek Global College.
By organizing activities that introduce students to international relations, geopolitics, diplomacy, and negotiation, the institution seeks to broaden educational opportunities beyond traditional classroom content.
In this context, international experience does not begin only when a student arrives in another country. It can also begin with the way students learn to appreciate different cultures, understand diverse contexts, and prepare to engage with an increasingly interconnected global community.

This perspective is central to Hayek’s approach to international education. The institution works to connect Brazilian students with international academic and professional experiences, including educational opportunities in the United States.

“We dream of a world where everyone can come together to work, study, and prosper in peace. A world where there are no barriers preventing anyone from studying internationally and becoming part of this international community,” Edson Agatti stated.

Preparing for the Present and the Future

Rather than simply preparing students for a two-day conference, HGI MUN offers an exercise that can benefit participants throughout their academic and professional lives: learning how to engage in dialogue when faced with complex problems.

In a world shaped by conflicts, economic shifts, trade disputes, and competing national interests, understanding different perspectives is an important part of preparing young people who aspire to work in international environments.

By placing students in the roles of diplomats and decision-makers, the conference creates a space where they can experience responsibilities that might otherwise seem far removed from their everyday lives.

At HGI MUN, these possibilities move beyond abstract concepts and become part of the students’ own experience.
For Hayek, promoting this type of event also means creating opportunities for young people to develop, while still in high school, the skills they need to understand the world and participate in it more actively.
